By Lauren Kelly (GSB ’18)

SWS 9.17 1Smart Woman Securities (SWS) kicked off its Fall Seminar Series on September 17 with a presentation by Drew Henriques, CFA, an associate in J.P. Morgan’s Municipal Research and Strategies team. Mr. Henriques has varied experience in the credit research field, having worked at Vanguard Group, Moody’s Investor Service and the Kemper Corporation before joining J.P. Morgan.

In his current role, he and his research team publish daily and weekly market analysis commentary for the firm’s investor clients. They also advise clients on risk and performance management in taxable and tax-exempt municipal bond portfolios.

Henriques shared an overview of the financial services world, explaining the differences between the various indexes such as DOW, S&P, and NASDAQ. He differentiated between bear and bull markets, and put things into a global perspective, outlining the effects of Europe’s financial crisis on interest rates and inflation in countries such as Germany and Italy. Finally, he outlined a typical work day, and suggested that club members research different financial fields.

“If you like getting into the nitty-gritty like I am right now,” he said, “maybe the analytical side is for you.” On the other hand, he explained that sales is a better area for the “people person.” J.P. Morgan offers various opportunities for both, domestically and globally.

On Wednesday, September 24, the SWS Fall Seminar Series will continue with a presentation by Marc Rosa of Merrill Lynch. Students interested in joining Fordham’s chapter of Smart Woman Securities are welcome to attend. The seminar will be held at 7:30 in FMH 216.
