Mark Higgins, was the guest speaker during the March 19, 2024 Financial Issues Forum, a virtual event hosted by Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business Center for Global Security Analysis, the Museum of American Finance, and the CFA Society New York. His talk was based upon his recently released book “Investing in U.S. Financial History: Understanding the Past to Forecast the Future,” which begins with Alexander Hamilton’s brilliant financial programs in 1790 and ends with the Federal Reserve’s battle to contain inflation in 2023. During an hour-long discussion that also included a lively Q&A session, Higgins discussed the danger of persistent inflation, key drivers of major financial crises, and current threats to U.S. economic prosperity, driving home the point that although these seem like new and emerging problems, there is virtually no financial event that is truly unprecedented. Higgins’ presentation provided attendees with a glimpse of how a deep understanding of financial history can improve current and future investment decision-making.
