World conference held at Fordham will explore media trends
What’s new in media?
Starting Monday, 120 academic presentations will aim to answer that question.
What does current research say about broadcast distribution portals?
Facebook as an information-management tool, or media labs in Spain?
More than 300 scholars and industry participants will be on hand to discuss these issues — and scores of others — in a landmark iteration of this longstanding global conference.
“It will be the biggest event in its 25-year history,” said Gabelli School of Business Assistant Professor Bozena Mierzejewska, who co-organized the event with fellow Fordham faculty member Axel Roepnack. “It will also be the first time when attendees from the media industry are so closely involved and integrated.”
Here are some more topics that will be addressed during the conference:
- Data privacy and its impact on advertising
- The evolution of the business model of newspapers
- Entrepreneurship in journalism startups
The keynote addresses – to be delivered at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – will be given by Denise Warren, member of the board of directors, Electronic Arts; Gerry Byrne, vice chairman, Penske Media Corporation; and Rob Norman, global chief digital officer & chairman North America, GroupM, respectively.
Norman’s address, highly anticipated by media professionals, will be livestreamed on the event website, Mierzejewska said. A link to the broadcast will be available on the website in advance.
Holding the event at Fordham offers the Gabelli School of Business a chance to showcase its “close connections to industries about which we research and teach,” she added.
The bulk of the events during the conference will be held at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus, with side trips for a dinner cruise around Manhattan, site visits (including one to the Rose Hill campus) and a Central Park soccer game on Friday, featuring academics and industry players.
A full listing of events is on the conference website.
