Consulting Cup final to be held on Jan. 28

A year-long study of Fortune 500 companies for Gabelli School of Business students is coming down to one final presentation for six teams of finalists, one of which will pocket $1,000 and become part of Fordham University history.
The Consulting Cup finals, formerly known as the Core Bowl, will be held on Jan. 28 in Keating First. The event will feature presentations by the six teams on the major challenge facing a Fortune 500 company and a potential solution, live judging and a bit of audience participation as well.
The competition is the culmination of the students’ examination of a number of Fortune 500 companies. In the beginning of the school year, 500 students are broken into cohorts, which are then divided up into teams of five or six. The teams study a company in many of their classes – marketing, finance and business communication, for example.
“Towards the middle of semester, the students are to develop a paper and develop a speech, where they focus on what the major challenge is and what the resolve for that major challenge would be,” said Kimberley LaMarque, a clinical instructor of communications and media management and the business communication coordinator at the university. “So the long version of that challenge and resolution is in the paper. The short version of it, the 10-minute version, is in the speech.”
The teams are then winnowed down to the six finalists, who will present before a live audience at the Jan. 28 event.
“And at that event, will emerge the first second and third winner of the Consulting Cup, as well as best speaker and most valuable player from every team,” LaMarque said.
The audience, using their cell phones, will be able to vote for best speaker.
In addition to a new name, the competition is also getting a physical cup, on which the names of the previous winners from the first three years of the event and the winners of the 2015 cup will be engraved.
“The cup will be housed on the third floor of Hughes Hall,” LaMarque said.
