photoRisk management is becoming a specialty at the Gabelli School of Business.

Mario DiFiore, who teaches finance in addition to advising the senior class, has arranged for the Gabelli School to join forces with Fordham Law this July to offer a week-long training program on compliance and risk. Students in the Real Estate Finance and Capital Markets course, taught by Rose McSween, are learning about the subject right now in part from risk experts who are guest lecturing at the Gabelli School.

Two who recently visited the Real Estate Finance and Capital Markets class are Jayne Day, chief risk officer of real estate for GE Commercial Finance, and Jim Colica (GSB ’69), a former chief risk officer for all of GE Capital.

Combined, the pair offered enormous knowledge and perspective. Ms. Day is credited with successfully transforming GE’s real estate risk management process over the last 13 years, turning it into what the industry regards as a “best-in-class” process. In addition to his extensive career accomplishments, Mr. Colica collaborated with Dean DiFiore in developing his executive-level risk-management training modules for Fordham.

In her lecture, Ms. Day detailed the proprietary credit underwriting process employed by GE and GE Capital to evaluate commercial real estate risk. Mr. Colica then spoke; in addition to amplifying the importance of careful asset-by-asset and market-by-market underwriting, he stressed the need for understanding the type of risk an investor may be taking and pricing assets and investments in a risk-adjusted manner.

The Real Estate Finance class wraps up next week along with the rest of the Gabelli School’s spring-semester courses, but the compliance and risk training workshop will continue the pattern of accomplished guest speakers when it begins on July 7.
