Michael Pirson’s efforts to reshape global businesses as catalysts for improving society and solving some of its ills have brought him a new honor and responsibility.

Pirson, an associate professor of management systems at the Gabelli School of Business, has been named a distinguished fellow at the Fowler Center at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Case Western and the Fowler Center have been holding global meetings on creating a more humanistic approach in business for a number of years, Pirson said, making the center a leader in the movement.

The university “has been instrumental in creating conversations across the business world but also with policy, United Nations folks and academics with regard to how to reframe business as an agent of positive change, an agent of world benefit,” Pirson said. “And one of these things that came out of these conversations was the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education initiative that Fordham is a signatory of.

In his new role, Pirson will be continuing his work on an initiative he calls “leading for well-being,” which has joined together leaders from business, government, academia, media and faith communities to seek ways in which businesses and the greater economy can add to the dignity of the human race.

Pirson’s honor reflects well on Fordham’s role in the movement toward a more purposeful business environment, he said.

“Fordham is seen as a player on the global level with regard to these issues,” Pirson said. “They connect nicely with Jesuit values and they make it possible for us to be seen as a leader.”
