Success story: Thea Katz nabs job in marketing for Food Network and more

Thea Katz (GSB ’12) knew since high school that she wanted a job in marketing. Now she has one.

After graduation, Thea will start work full-time as a digital marketing coordinator for Scripps Network Interactive, based out of New York City’s Chelsea Market. She will create digital campaigns for the Food Network, Cooking Channel, Food.com and Travel Channel, not to mention other Scripps properties. She’ll have a lot of other responsibilities, too — including managing promotions on the web, on mobile devices and via e-mail newsletters and making recommendations for improvements based on weekly analyses of analytics.

This kind of creative-focused position had been in Thea’s sights for a long time. “I’ve always had the goal of landing a great job once I graduated, and I am very lucky to be able to say that I did,” she said.

The path that led her here began with an internship. Thea has been an intern at Scripps for this spring semester, and she noted that her last few months at the company were all part of the hiring process. She had indicated to Scripps way back during her internship interview that she’d be interested in a full-time position starting this May if one were open to her — and that statement clearly stood out to management.

“I think having asked that in the interview showed that I wanted to be there,” Thea said. “My boss remembered me asking that question and ended up pushing for my department to open up a position for me.”

Thea is thrilled that he did. In addition to enjoying the substance of her work at Scripps, she has found a valuable resource in her supervisor, who “has been a great mentor to me by helping me get to know the people in the company and teaching me everything about marketing and television.”

Congratulations, Thea, on your full-time job with Scripps — and don’t hesitate to bring us samples from the Food Network and Cooking Channel test kitchens when you come back to Rose Hill as a visiting alumna!
