Success story: JPMorgan Chase chooses senior Domenick Ferrera

Is it possible to have a long history with a company before you’ve even graduated from college?

For Domenick Ferrera (GSB ’13), it certainly is.

Domenick has been working on and off for JPMorgan Chase since summer 2011, when he held his first internship there. With another internship under his belt since then, plus a great performance history at the firm, it’s no surprise that he has been offered a full-time job with the bank beginning this summer.

After graduation, Domenick will head to JPMorgan Risk Management in hedge funds and asset management. He is looking forward to continuing with the company.

“After interning there for several years, I know that JPMorgan is one of the best, if not the best company around,” he said. “I only have a few companies to compare it to through intern experiences, but the environment at JPMorgan is simply unique.”

JPMorgan clearly found Domenick unique, too. He set himself apart in their eyes not only as an intern, but also in the week-long JPMorgan Risk Competition, held about a year ago here at Fordham. Students apply to participate, and competitors face off in teams of five before JPMorgan credit officers, who act as judges. The students have a full week to research the challenge they are given, such as a loan proposal, and must prepare a 20-minute presentation that details their decision and rationale.

“My team wound up winning the competition, but that was due to the number of hours we put into preparation over the week,” Domenick recalled.

His team’s winning performance led to his most recent internship in the asset managers and hedge funds group of JPMorgan Chase’s risk management division, in summer 2012.

“I am always striving to learn as much as possible, and this group was filled with variability,” Domenick said. Within the group, I had week-long credit packages and assignments to do, but in addition, I got exposure to CDOs, business development companies, credit reviews for hedge funds, and live loan transactions where I got to go to the company’s bankers’ meeting on a daily basis.”

Domenick is excited about working in the risk-management sector, which truly matches his strengths and interests.

“I chose risk because of the mixed environment you are exposed to on a daily basis,” he explained. “There are projects within risk that can take days, even weeks to complete, but don’t demand immediate decision-making. For the most part, I enjoy having enough time to complete a task, and risk definitely presents this opportunity.”

The biggest opportunity of all is the career that lies ahead of Domenick. We at the Gabelli School of Business wish him the best!
