Success story: Viacom recruits Denisse Garcia for fall internship

DenisseGarciaJust 24 hours after her interview, Denisse Garcia (GSB’15) got word that she’d been selected for the marketing communications internship at VMN Corp.—Viacom.

It’s an exciting opportunity for this marketing, communications and media management major because the internship involves working on popular TV channels, including TV Land, Comedy Central and Spike TV channels.

Ad sales and sponsorships and product integration are among the responsibilities of Denisse’s new position. “I act as a liaison between the clients and the networks, read scripts and screen episodes,” she said. “I love marketing and advertising so I am thrilled to have landed this position.”

Getting firsthand experience on screen and behind the scenes will no doubt serve Denisse well in her future career in the field. For someone whose ultimate goal in life is “to become the CEO or CMO of a major Fortune 500 company,” this internship puts her off to a great start, particularly for the experience she’ll gain exercising her communication skills in sales and her creative abilities in the other aspects of the role. “I am also hoping to make some great connections at Viacom by networking throughout the different departments,” she added.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Denisse came to the US when she was five. She grew up in a family of mostly boys and is a self-proclaimed “Tom boy.” An avid football fan, she hasn’t missed one Fordham football game since her freshman year. She’s also served as the team’s recruiting assistant for the past two years. Denisse is an NFL contributor to the blog Her League Online, and also started her own blog, Curious Kitten, where she writes “about everything from business to sports to college life.”

Denisse is deeply involved in the campus community and participates in several student clubs, including the Fordham Fanatics, El Grito de Lares, Academia Hispana, Ballroom Dance Club, Commuting Students Association, Fordham Marketing Association and the Business of Sports Society. She loves sporting events, dancing and music in the little free time she’s got left.

Congratulations, Denisse, and the best of luck in your internship!
