Success story: Fellowships prepare Sama Habib for Foreign Service

Success Stories | Jul 07, 2014 |

HabibHeahshotPromoting peace and equality in the world regardless of gender, religion or class is Sama Habib’s dream. Two prestigious fellowships she was recently awarded will help Sama accomplish her future goals and gain experiences second to none in foreign affairs.

This summer, Sama (GSB ’14) will intern at the U.S. Embassy in London, sponsored by the Pamela Harriman Fellowship. This prestigious award is given annually to three undergraduates across the nation serving in a summer position with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Embassies in London and Paris.

Her post in the economics department will be informative, given the active business and trade between the U.S. and Great Britain.

Sama says she also hopes to help prepare the Embassy for the NATO summit. “Overall, the fellowship supports me for this unparalleled opportunity to see the intricacies of an Embassy, contribute to international causes and gain an understanding of the work and life of a Foreign Service Officer,” she explained.

Once she completes her internship, Sama will return to New York where she will pursue another important undertaking that is supported by another fellowship she was recently awarded, the Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship. She will begin working toward an MIA at Columbia University, with a concentration in Energy and the Environment or International Security Policy.

Administered for the U.S. Department of State by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships develop men and women whose academic backgrounds fulfill the skill needs of the State Department. As a fellow, Sama will participate in two internships, domestically and abroad. When she completes her master’s degree, she will move another step closer to her dream as she begins five years of service as a Foreign Service Officer she’s committed to—happily.

Sama says she has already met Ambassadors and State Department officials through this fellowship’s orientation program. “We even got to meet Ambassador Pickering himself which was an enormous honor as he holds the highest honors in the industry,” she said. “A few of us even took a selfie with him which attests to his humility and spirit.”

Congratulations and best of luck to you, Sama, on the exciting journey that lies ahead!
