For Nazifa Nasim, BS ’17, a summer internship with Discovery Communications last year was an excellent learning experience.
Now, it’s become even more valuable.
Nasim, 20, from Fresh Meadows, Queens, learned this week that the internship led to her being named a 2015 Scott Weiss Scholarship winner by the T. Howard Foundation. The Fordham junior, majoring in business administration with a dual concentration in finance and marketing, was one of nine students nationwide given a scholarship.
“I was so excited and felt really honored because I knew that the scholarship is pretty competitive, and a lot of the applicants from the foundation apply from not just my internship year,” Nasim said.
Discovery Communications is a partner company with the T. Howard Foundation, which is dedicated to increasing diversity in the media and entertainment industries. The foundation helps students to get internships in media fields, though Nasim was hired at Discovery independently. The foundation allowed her to be a part of their final talent pool of interns, who have access to professional development and scholarship opportunities.
During her internship, Nasim worked in the advertising sales department, assisting account executives with projects. She is interested in pursuing opportunities in business strategy and business development when she graduates.
The Gabelli School of Business, she said, has given her a good understanding of all aspects of business, allowing her to hone in on what interests her the most. That makes the school “unique,” she said.
