Success story: Emily Osman to intern as J.P. Morgan Summer Analyst

Finance major Emily Osman (GSB ’15) has been working toward a summer internship as a sales and trading analyst at JP Morgan since her freshman year in college. The main attraction? An opportunity to get hands-on experience and an inside view of the many different possibilities for her future career in the financial services industry.

“My goal is to explore as many trading groups and roles within the program as possible to see where I fit in best,” she said.

Through her involvement in Smart Woman Securities (SWS) since her freshman year—as a financial analyst on the investment fund, on the executive board and presently as the group’s chief development officer—Emily said she has been able to explore the cultures and values of many different organizations. She has also been working in the fixed income division at J.P. Morgan. Getting to know the firm through these experiences has left a positive impression about the firm’s commitment to developing young women through its mentoring and career development initiatives.

“My experience so far in the industry and SWS has shown me how few senior women there are in the industry, but that with hard work there are opportunities,” Emily said. “I have seen a change in the industry, especially at J.P. Morgan, to develop young female talent and I want to be a part of that change.”

Emily, a Long Island native and marathon runner, credits her peers and mentors at SWS and the Gabelli School for their guidance and support, and she enjoys the opportunity to “pay it forward” with younger SWS members.

She also welcomes her eight-week crash course in all things J.P. Morgan with the hope that the experience will help her narrow her focus for post-graduation opportunities. Certainly, the 30 hours per week she’s dedicating to the firm’s fixed income division is also helping to build her resume and prepare for the intensive summer internship.
