While being an intern for an event planner may seem a bit removed for an accounting and finance major, Cindy Chen thinks her new job has benefits beyond the work experience.

“I was a little bit shy at the first party,” Chen, a native of China, said about her marketing and sales work with Eventsy, an event coordinator located in midtown Manhattan. [But] after a month I’ve become more confident. So I think my English is better than before.”

Chen is charged with helping to email invitations to parties and events, helping to organize them, and assisting with list management and follow-up.

The 20-year-old rising junior said the job has practical implications for her major as well. During parties and events, she speaks with attorneys and real estate agents who talk about current trends in accounting and finance.

Chen found her internship through Fordham University’s Career Link. She sent out a number of résumés before the offer from Eventsy came through.

Now Chen is planning on making the most of her experience, establishing new friendships and creating professional relationships that she said will aid her as she pursues her degree and prepares for her career.
