Success story: Sterling Publishing hires Marielle Rivera as intern

Getting an internship took Marielle Rivera (GSB ’15) all of a week.
In mid-November, she got an invitation for an interview at Sterling Publishing, whose reps she had first met at Fordham’s fall career fair. She interviewed with a staff member from the marketing department and, a mere seven days later, had an offer.
Marielle is going to be Sterling’s only marketing intern during the spring 2013 semester. She will help across the department with marketing, public relations and sales, and she’ll have a mentor from the company’s graphic-design staff. The position is perfect for her, as an avid reader of books and magazines who is curious about the business behind both.
“I’m interested in how you can market the written word,” Marielle said. “You can’t exactly give a full synopsis of the book in an ad campaign, so how do you get the public excited about something so abstract? I think a lot of it has to do with book covers, graphic design and other visual promotions, and I’m really excited to learn about that.”
In addition to picking up skills on the job, Marielle will get to attend Sterling’s “Lunch and Learn” sessions, which go over the nuts and bolts of the publishing industry, and she will have the chance to meet company representatives up to the level of executive vice president. She will work in the Park Avenue South office of Sterling, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Barnes and Noble.
Congratulations, Marielle!
