Being a strategic consultant for a multinational Fortune 500 company is a complex job that requires reaching into nearly every area of business.

More than 500 sophomores experienced this challenge through the 2015 Gabelli School Consulting Cup competition, held in December. Four students – Menelaos Alexandrakis, Victoria Cleveland, Joseph Gorman, and Raisa Masood, all BS ’18 – earned top honors out of 108 teams for their business recommendations for Estée Lauder.

The team’s solution — based on weeks of research — was for Estée Lauder to focus on and expand its offerings for male skin-care and body-care products.

The competition is part of the sophomore year Integrated Project at the Gabelli School.

Students prepare for the competition with guidance from the business communication faculty. The entire sophomore class split into teams of up to six students, with each team assigned to one of six publicly traded companies: Ruby Tuesday, Yahoo!, InterContinental Hotel Group, Estée Lauder, Kellogg’s and Campbell Soup Company.

The first phase of the contest narrowed the field to six finalists, which presented at a December event held in Keating Hall. The presentations, designed to highlight the creative aspects of the assignment as well as research and presentation skills, drew an overflow crowd of spectators, giving the event a rock-concert feel. Gabelli School Dean Donna Rapaccioli called it “the highlight of sophomore year.”
