Ascend jumps into metro area mentoring circle

ASCEND Event Recaps | Oct 28, 2013 |

by Andrew Montelongo (GSB ’16)

This past Saturday, Fordham’s chapter of Ascend headed to Deloitte’s offices in Manhattan to network.

At an event called the Annual Mentoring Circle, set up by Ascend’s New York metro area organization, 11 of our students joined members from Baruch College, New York University, St. John’s University and other schools to meet with staff from the Big Four accounting firms and financial institutions.

Sitting in groups of no more than four, students had the chance to candidly ask professionals for career advice. “It was really special to sit down with mentors in such a small group setting,” said Terence Kuo (GSB ’17). One PwC partner in attendance used to be an adjunct professor of accounting at Fordham, teaching audit to Gabelli School students!

Events such as the mentoring circle are what help many Fordham Ascend members to get internship and full-time job offers, not to mention scholarships sponsored by PwC, EY, Becker and other companies. Ascend’s national network is powerful.

“Through organizations such as Ascend, we are able to utilize the advantage a New York school has over other universities,” said Juan Gabriel Garcia (GSB ’14). Participation in Saturday’s mentoring circle carried a wide range of benefits, from the significant — developing connections with staff at large firms — to the insignificant but fun, such as scoping out Deloitte’s high-tech building elevators.

Cool elevators are not the only things that can help you “Ascend” to higher ground. For more about our group’s activities, e-mail us at ascend@fordham.edu.
