Talking with … Maria Saint Hilaire

Interviews | Sep 21, 2018 |

Maria Saint HilaireThe “Talking with…” series helps you get to know a different Gabelli School faculty member, administrator, or staff member in every installment. To start off the fall semester, we’re speaking with Maria Saint Hilaire, executive secretary for the undergraduate program.

How has your role changed since you started at the Gabelli School?
My role and responsibilities have changed very much since I started working at Fordham. In addition to being the executive secretary at the undergraduate level, I also assist Peter Johnson with the MS in Marketing Intelligence program. My previous job before Fordham was very monotonous and boring compared to what I do here, and I have more responsibilities.

What part of your day do you look forward to the most?
I look forward to when the students come to the office and just stop by to say hi. I have met wonderful students at Fordham, and I enjoy learning where they come from and getting to know their culture. The fact that they come to take a break and talk to me gives me comfort—they see me as more than just an employee.

Can you describe an example of something new you’ve learned at Fordham?
Something I didn’t know at first was the meaning of Jesuit—I always heard people talking about it. I am glad I asked what it was and how Fordham embraces the meaning. I have learned that being a Jesuit means caring, giving, being selfless, and being men and women of service. The focus and importance that Fordham puts on the Jesuit values are so important to our Fordham community.

What’s one way you’ve noticed the location of the Lincoln Center campus encourages students and staff to serve others?
Because of where the Lincoln Center campus is located, we have the advantage of being able to volunteer our time to serve different organizations around the city. I would have to say we are perfectly located to participate.

Do you have any advice for undergraduates starting at the Gabelli School this year?
My advice to our undergraduate students is to enjoy their time at Fordham. These four years go by quickly. At the same time, don’t lose focus of your studies, and take advantage of every opportunity that the Gabelli School has to offer.
