Interviews | Apr 27, 2017 |

Marisa TotinoEvery “Talking with…” installment helps you to get to know a different Gabelli School faculty member, administrator, or staff member. This week, learn more about Marisa Totino, assistant dean for freshmen at the Rose Hill campus.

What motivated you to come to the Gabelli School?
The Gabelli School of Business represents two ideals that I am deeply committed to: Jesuit pedagogy and business education. I was inspired to join the school because everyone I’ve met here is dedicated to developing ethical business leaders who can leave a positive impact on the world. What more can you ask for?

As a Fordham alumna, what’s one change you’ve noticed since your undergraduate or graduate studies here?
Something that always strikes me is the growth of the University, in so many different ways. It’s always exciting to reflect on how far the University has come, especially looking at the progress it’s made in expanding student academic and leadership resources.

What is your favorite part about working with freshmen?
Getting to know students in one-on-one meetings is definitely my favorite—I’m able to learn more about what students hope to accomplish and identify ways that we can help them achieve their goals!

What are you looking forward to in the last few weeks of the semester?
After Easter break, there’s always an added sense of excitement and a buzz on campus. I look forward to taking the next few weeks to help freshmen end their first year on a successful note and celebrate their accomplishments. I am also excited to welcome the Class of 2021 in just a few months!

As an alumna of Fordham, commencement also holds a very special place in my heart. It’s a perfect moment to pause and recognize all the potential in the young adults we are sending out to make the world a better place.

If you could only give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen, what would it be?
Start strong! What you do in the first few weeks of the fall semester sets the tone for a successful four years. Make sure that you are committed to your academics and that you are engaging with all that Fordham has to offer—join clubs, get to know new people, and push yourself to reach outside your comfort zone. AND: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s a team of people here who want you to succeed and will do whatever they can to help you accomplish your goals.

Fun questions

Do you have a pick to win the NBA playoffs?
I don’t really follow basketball; it’s not my sport. Talk to me during football season–Go Pack Go!

Would you rather be too hot or too cold?
I’m a summer person, so I would rather be at the beach; even if it’s too hot you can take a dip in the water or enjoy a cool summer breeze.

Favorite off-campus Bronx activity:
In the spring, I love visiting Wave Hill in Riverdale. It’s a beautiful public garden right off the Hudson River (and not too far from campus, so check it out!).

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or cable:
Netflix all the way.

Best part of spring in New York City:
Longer days to enjoy being outside!

Favorite ice cream flavor:
Pistachio
