Talking with … Gina Hill LoBasso

Interviews | Dec 08, 2017 |

Gina Hill LoBassoEvery “Talking with…” installment introduces you to a different Gabelli School faculty member, administrator, or staff member. This week, get to know Gina Hill LoBasso, assistant director of career advising for undergraduate marketing and adjunct professor of marketing and business communication and media management.

How do you use your past experience in academia and business to your advantage in your current role?
I spent over 10 years in marketing and sales management in the computer industry, developing corporate relationships with market leaders such as Apple and Microsoft, and was responsible for sales-team training effectiveness. I have been able to leverage this experience in creating corporate-engagement connections with students in addition to training them to effectively brand themselves in the marketplace.

Are there any projects you’re hoping to accomplish before the holiday break?
I am serving on the adjunct faculty for business communication and marketing and have been preparing students for the Consulting Cup challenge. As students develop responses to their company’s identified challenge, they create opportunities for long-term success and sustainability—the primary value that management consultants need to deliver to their clients.

What do you find particularly interesting about today’s marketing industry for those just entering it?
The one common theme is that this industry rewards diversity of experiences as well as a tactical knowledge base. Students who immerse themselves in a variety of learning experiences, including different types of internships, volunteer opportunities, professional organizations and activities, and study abroad, are the ones marketing organizations seek out. They are able to demonstrate a much-needed resilience, characterized by the ability to adapt quickly and solve different types of business challenges.

Can you share an example of students pursuing marketing with a goal to serve others?
The missions of organizations are becoming increasingly focused on corporate sustainability and innovation as a vital role in corporate strategy. Gabelli School students have recognized this importance and are committed to developing increased awareness and understanding of the role of corporate sustainability in ethical business practice.

What is your top tip for someone preparing for a job interview?
I always stress to students that prior to any interview, you should make sure you are aware of the top three things you want to communicate to the employer, no matter what. These are the top three reasons your skills and talents are aligned with the responsibilities of the position. This way you can feel confident that your true value was expressed!

Fun questions

Fruit or vegetables?
Veggies!

Most picturesque spot on the Rose Hill campus:
The view of Keating standing by the fountain in front of Gabelli … every season of the year.

You’re granted a free two-week vacation, or two one-week vacations, to anywhere you choose. Which do you pick?
Two-week vacation to Spain. One of my favorite adventures was having the opportunity to spend two weeks in Spain visiting a close friend. There is nothing like experiencing the culture with someone who can help you discover those hidden treasures of everyday living, eating, and celebrating—and more living, eating, and celebrating!

Are you planning to make a New Year’s resolution?
I’m keeping a gratitude journal. It‘s a commitment to making every day of the year great.
