How the top investors lead the way

Allocators—an elite group of investors—influence how money moves around the world on the behalf of institutions such as foundations, pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds.

The host of the acclaimed podcast Capital Allocators and author of the recent book Capital Allocators: How the World’s Elite Money Managers Lead and Invest, Ted Seides, spoke about these investment leaders in a Gabelli School Centennial Speaker Series webinar sponsored by the CFA Society New York, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis, and the Museum of American Finance.

Seides discussed how the science of decision-making impacts the investment process. Naturally, it takes a while to fully evaluate all of the information surrounding a decision, making it especially important for allocators in a group setting to take the time to consider all possible angles.

“The leader, or the ultimate decision-maker, should be the last person to speak because, as soon as they espouse their views, everyone will fall in line,” he said. “What you’re trying to do in a good decision process is to put as many of the facts, opinions, and risks that you can on the table.”
