Gregory Makoff, Ph.D., was the guest speaker during the March 12, 2024 Financial Issues Forum, a virtual event hosted by Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business Center for Global Security Analysis, the Museum of American Finance, and the CFA Society New York. His presentation was based upon his recently released book “Default: The Landmark Court Battle Over Argentina’s $100 Billion Debt Restructuring.” During his talk, Makoff described the unprecedented 15-year conflict over Argentina’s 2001 financial default that ultimately led to 10 years of litigation in U.S. courts and served to remodel the legal framework for sovereign debt financing. His revealing commentary took the audience through the intricacies of the case, shedding light on just what was going on during backroom negotiations and in the courtrooms where Argentina’s financial future was ultimately decided. Makoff’s discussion offered a deep understanding of how global financial capitalism works and explained in great detail, the legal and political ramifications that occur when a nation cannot repay its debt.
