BookTalk: Professor Bob Hurley discusses trust, 12.14.2011

Faculty , Featured Events Stories | Dec 01, 2011 |

How much do you trust corporations right now?

Do you trust our government?

Do you trust your health-insurance company, the administration of your university, or your financial services representative?

Certain individuals and organizations are skilled at cultivating trust, based on their actions and ways of working, while others have become sad emblems of a general collapse in trust in U.S. society. Why are some institutions trustworthy while others are not? How do you establish trust? Once you have it, how do you keep it? Discuss these issues with Fordham’s Professor Bob Hurley on Wednesday, December 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the 12th-floor lounge of the Lincoln Center campus’s Lowenstein Building. The discussion will last approximately one hour, and the remainder of the time will feature a catered reception.

Dr. Hurley is the author of a new book, The Decision to Trust, and a strong believer that now, more than ever, there is a desperate need for a nationwide conversation about trust and trustworthiness. Hurley’s research reveals a frightening fact: Across sectors — business, government, the media and beyond — trust is at an all-time low. The manifestations of it are everywhere. Look at Occupy Wall Street and its parallel movements in other cities; the scarcity of jobs in the United States and the corresponding fear that they will not become plentiful once again; international debt crises; the recent government upheavals in the Middle East; and the rise of the Tea Party and other alternative political movements.

All of these phenomena share a common root: People have lost faith that those in power are fairly representing their interests.

Dr. Hurley invites current students, Fordham alumni of all schools, faculty and members of the general public to join him for a talk about how creating more trustworthy leaders and institutions might offer a solution.
