Frosh Film Fest puts business on the big screen

Could a movie give you insight into what might be your major?

Maybe! Maybe not. But no matter what, the Gabelli School’s Frosh Film Fest will be a good time.

Because, come on — free popcorn, lemonade, movie candy and other treats (CHICKEN FINGERS!!!), plus films you’d actually go see in the theater, like Moneyball and Office Space? All screened for you and your friends. Yes.

Dean Jason and a group of students have created a film series for the Class of 2016 that is aimed to both entertain and give real (and watchable!) examples of the business disciplines covered in The Ground Floor. Check out this schedule and follow the Fest on Twitter for updates:

Business economics, communications: Moneyball — Wednesday, November 7, 2:30 p.m.
Management: Glengarry Glen Ross — Wednesday, November 28, 2:30 p.m.
Finance, business ethics: Wall Street — Wednesday, December 5, 2:30 p.m.
Accounting: Office Space — Wednesday, February 6, 2:30 p.m.
Information systems, entrepreneurship: The Social Network — Wednesday, April 3, 2:30 p.m.
Marketing: The Devil Wears Prada — Wednesday, April 17, 2:30 p.m.

Though the film series was planned for freshmen, all Gabelli Students are welcome. Students may sign up in advance for Moneyball by clicking here, or they can simply show up. All movies will be shown in Daleo Hall B, in the lower level of Hughes. After each one, a Gabelli School faculty member will lead a discussion about the business disciplines involved, making this a great way to get to know professors before you have them in class. (It’s finance professor Mario DiFiore, who is also the senior class dean, for the first one.)

So, what do freshmen get out of this, besides free food and free films with friends? Andrew Montelongo (GSB ’16) explains:

“The only business course we take in our freshman year is The Ground Floor,” he said. What the Film Fest hopes to do “is to allow freshmen more time to think about what major they might want to declare later on in their college career.”
