It’s a common belief that business leaders must be ruthless, focused only on shareholder optimization and profit, but a growing movement in commerce seeks to dispel that notion.

Leaders, say those who advocate for a new approach, can succeed with humility and with empathy for their employees, clients and customers.

Those advocates will gather for a panel discussion at Fordham University on April 12.

Tickets to the event are free, but attendance is limited. Register here.

The panelists – including Ron Cordes, co-founder and executive co-chairman of AssetMark Investment Services; Gabelli School of Business Dean Donna Rapaccioli; and Fr. Thomas Scirghi, S.J., associate professor of theology and rector of Fordham’s Jesuit community – will discuss the potential for leaders to create a positive impact for society through empathy and humility.

“If you have those skills, then you are going to most of the time be a better leader, and that … clashes with the current culture,” said Associate Professor Michael Pirson, who is planning to facilitate the discussion.

Pirson said the panel is one of many he hopes to organize to explore humanistic approaches to leadership and business.
