Since January 2012, Mr. Melendez has been senior advisor to the international baseball operations department in the MLB commissioner’s office. Before taking on this role, he was the league’s vice president of international operations, overseeing MLB’s satellite office in the Dominican Republic. As vice president, he also administered the Winter League Agreement between Major League Baseball and the four countries that make up the professional winter baseball leagues, regulated MLB teams’ activities outside the United States, and helped to put together teams for major non-MLB international events, such as the Olympic Games.

In 2006 and 2009, Mr. Melendez was the general manager of Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic and will serve in that capacity again this year.

Prior to moving into his vice president’s role in 1999, Mr. Melendez spent 16 years in MLB’s labor department, where he assisted in the negotiation, administration and enforcement of the collective bargaining agreement between the teams and players. He previously worked with the National Labor Relations Board and with the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Mr. Melendez holds an undergraduate degree from the City College of New York and a law degree from Rutgers University of Law.
