A finance major with a minor in economics, Karan Gupta (GSB ’13) is ideally positioned to begin work as an internal finance intern this summer at accounting giant Ernst & Young.
Karan will commute to the firm’s Times Square headquarters, where he will analyze financial statements and make recommendations internally. He also will assist E&Y’s financial management associates in their day-to-day work, which includes finding sources of capital to use for investment. Karan expects the transition to be a smooth one, based on his prior experience as a finance intern for Merrill Lynch, where he helped his supervisor with responsibilities such as portfolio management.
Academics at Gabelli have prepared Karan well, too. He is among the Class of 2013 pioneers who were the first to take Gabelli’s innovative new integrated business core curriculum.
“What was most helpful was that I was able to take advanced business courses early in my sophomore year instead of taking them as a senior,” Karan said. “I was exposed to a great deal early on.” He said the integrated core’s large-scale team-based projects were especially helpful, such as the second-semester sophomore effort to manage a financial portfolio through careful data collection and analysis.
“This required major teamwork and an immense amount of research daily,” Karan said. “It helped me become a leader and be able to work in a team, which will be an essential skill at E&Y.”
The Gabelli School of Business wishes Karan a great summer and hopes that it is yet another step toward his post-graduation goal of moving into the world of consulting. Best of luck from all of us!
