Meet a real-estate exec and notable Fordham donor

James J. Houlihan (GSB ’74) leads a phenomenally successful real estate business than has been in his family since 1891, when his great-grandfather founded it. His work spans commercial brokering and property management, real estate capital and more.

He is also a businessman who exemplifies giving back. His family generously donated $1 million to Fordham in 2005 for the baseball program — both Mr. Houlihan and his brother played for the Rams — and he lends his support to humanitarian causes, parks in his home county of Westchester, Irish heritage organizations and more. Mr. Houlihan lives by the Jesuit-inspired business principle of using your success to benefit others.

Here is some more information about Mr. Houlihan:

Since 1973, Mr. Houlihan has been active in the commercial real estate industry throughout the United States, primarily in the New York metro area. Financial, nonprofit and educational institutions have retained him as a consultant and as an agent to consult on, manage, lease, acquire, renovate and sell real estate.

A past chairman of the prestigious Sales Brokers Committee of the Real Estate Board of New York, Mr. Houlihan won the board’s “Most Ingenious Deal of the Year Award” in 1999 and was runner up in 2006. He is a frequent expert speaker for industry groups and has lectured at Columbia University, NYU, Fordham and the New School for Social Research.

As part of his contributions to the local area and society as a whole, Mr. Houlihan has served on Westchester County’s parks department board; chaired the committee to establish a monument to the period in Ireland known as the Great Hunger, from 1845 to 1851; raised funds for a September 11 memorial in Westchester; and curated a museum exhibition on Celtic warriors that was displayed in New York, Boston and Ireland.

Mr. Houlihan has received awards and other laurels from Ellis Island, Irish America magazine, the Irish Arts Center, the Irish American Building Society award, the Westchester County board of legislators and parks department, St. Patrick’s Home and Fordham. He lives with his family in Bronxville, New York.
