Last month, the Fordham Marketing Association (FMA) held a Fashion and Beauty Panel featuring five alumnae in these fields. It drew an overflowing audience of students, all hoping to better understand the inner workings of the fashion world.

Panelists were:

  • Caitlin Byrnes, GABELLI BS ’12, assistant brand manager, Tiffany & Co.
  • Megan Connor, FCRH ’16, digital marketing assistant, Tory Sport
  • Theodora Austin, FCRH ’16, digital merchandising coordinator, Victoria’s Secret
  • Isabel de Lecea, FCRH ’16, wholesale assistant, Versace
  • Claire Fields, FCLC ’16, merchandise assistant, Bergdorf Goodman

The highlight of the evening was the Q&A portion, during which panelists shared three tips students can apply right now.

First, contrary to common stereotypes, working in fashion is not always glamorous. Students will need to put in a significant amount of work, especially at the beginning of their careers, to demonstrate work ethic and build relationships.

Alumnae also emphasized the importance of building a network within the industry, including setting up informational interviews and attending alumni events at Fordham.

Finally, students must take initiative in looking for jobs. Apply everywhere, the alumnae encouraged, especially to your dream jobs.
