Over the course of Climate Week NYC 2024, which occurred in late September, the Gabelli School’s Responsible Business Center hosted four events that brought together thought leaders from across industry and academia on topics ranging from AI and ESG regulations to the next generation of climate activists and cross-sector climate solutions. The Center, a platform for interdisciplinary engagement in sustainable and responsible business, helps to amplify the role of business as a catalyst for lasting change. It convenes and empowers industry partners, nonprofit organizations, academicians, and students to move forward in ways that positively impact people and planet.

On Tuesday, September 24, the Center partnered with SustainableIT.org for a full-day event that focused on the role of ethical AI, partnerships, and leveraging technology responsibly to achieve a sustainable and equitable future.

On Wednesday, September 25, the Center co-hosted an event with Agendi that featured a panel discussion with the Gabelli School’s Barbara Porco, Ph.D., clinical professor, associate dean of graduate studies, and managing director of the Responsible Business Center; Helene Banks, ’88 (FORDHAM LAW), partner, Cahill Gordon & Reindel; Arnaud Brohé, founder and CEO, Agendi; and Natalie Runyon, content strategist for ESG, human rights crimes, and AI in courts, Thomson Reuters. The discussion focused on how California and EU laws are shaping climate action in corporate America and paving the way for widespread regulatory changes. It was moderated by Colleen Cochran, ’21 (FCRH), senior sustainability consultant, Agendi, who also is a member of the Responsible Business Center’s Emerging Leaders Network.

Panel discussion at The Climate Nest Campus

On Thursday, September 26, the Responsible Business Center, along with the Estée Lauder Companies and Net Impact, co-hosted an event at The Climate Nest Campus, the official event partner of Climate Week NYC. The climate action event, which was titled “A New Generation of Climate Careers: Leading Change as a Young Professional,” was designed to inspire and equip future industry leaders who seek to pursue climate-related careers. Harnessing the excitement of Climate Week NYC, it aimed to enlighten and engage those who will play an instrumental role in shaping our climate future.

Andrew Jones, executive director of Climate Interactive

On Friday, September 27, the Center held a ClimateCAP event exclusively designed for current M.B.A. students at the Gabelli School and across the New York metro area. The event was sponsored by Trane Technologies, a global climate innovator. Andrew Jones, executive director of Climate Interactive, led a workshop utilizing an online simulator to showcase potential climate solutions. The workshop provided insights into the ways students, upon graduation, could leverage technology and their skills to become agents of change as they advance in their careers.Throughout the week, the theme and emphasis of all events stressed the importance of collaboration across sectors and areas of expertise to drive climate solutions in a focused, action-oriented way. The Responsible Business Center’s leadership role in these events has positioned it for even greater success as a champion of sustainable and responsible business.
