How and when can I apply for federal loans?

If you are a U.S. citizen, you may be eligible to borrow Federal Direct Loans.  The maximum Direct Unsubsidized loan eligibility is $20,500 for one academic year.  In order to be eligible for a Federal Direct Loan you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in a degree granting program
  • Complete a FAFSA, Entrance Counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note
    • We suggest completing this step a month prior to orientation
  • Make satisfactory academic progress
  • Not have defaulted on a prior federal student loan
  • Not borrowed more than $138,000 in previous Federal Direct Loans

If you need to borrow more than your maximum eligibility in the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, consider the Federal Direct Graduate Plus Loan:

Graduate Plus Loans are educational loans through the Department of Education for graduate students only. The Graduate Plus loan has the same requirements as the Federal Direct Loans and includes a credit check requirement. The Graduate Plus loan allows students to borrow up to their cost of attendance less any aid (loans or scholarships) received. International students are not eligible for Federal Direct Loans or Graduate Plus Loans.

How and when can I apply for private education loans?

Any student, U.S. or international, can apply for Private Education Loans from various financial institutions. They are not guaranteed by the federal government and interest generally begins to accrue from the date of disbursement. Private Education Loans usually require a credit worthy co-signer. International students are not allowed Federal Direct or Graduate Plus loans.

We suggest you use ELM Select as a research tool to help you compare lenders and make an informed decision. The lenders listed on ELM Select are lenders Fordham has worked with in the past and are offered for your convenience. You are not limited to these lenders and you may choose any lender you wish.

The two most commonly used lenders by international students at Gabelli are Prodigy Finance and MPower loans.
