Half-Day, Online ESG Boot Camp Offered by Gabelli School of Business Provides a Deep Dive Into an Emerging Area of Specialization

Alumni | Nov 07, 2022 |

This fall, on November 18, 2022, the Gabelli School of Business will offer a half-day, online ESG Boot Camp for mid-career professionals, executives, and individuals serving on boards across industries–from accounting and financial services to NGOs. ESG is the acronym for the environmental, social and governance factors that are playing an ever-increasingly important role in business. In the evolving global business environment, companies can no longer simply focus on making a profit, they must be held accountable in acting responsibly and in creating value for all stakeholders including customers, employees, suppliers and society as a whole.

This boot camp helps participants understand the mix of extra-financial ESG risks companies face including climate change, pollution and waste, human capital, product liability, corruption, business ethics and cyber threats, however it also highlights new opportunities. While it is offered online, it provides the chance to exchange ideas and ask questions that are relevant to one’s own particular industry or business scenario.

“The program is designed to be highly interactive and includes group work as well. Nevertheless, the nature of the subject incentivizes conversation and my delivery is structured as a conversation more than a lecture. Participants come away with the knowledge base they need and certainly the one they want. Class feels to me more like a collaborative work group,” commented Tim Hedley, Ph.D. who is teaching in the program.

The ESG Boot Camp is packed with information that is immediately applicable in the workplace. It focuses on ESG market drivers and stakeholders, while teaching students how to integrate sustainability-related values, goals and metrics into business strategies. It also explores the ESG reporting landscape including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), TCFD/CDSB and IIRC/ Frameworks.

“Short courses of this nature enable participants to expand a knowledge base that you don’t typically find in standard university curricula. Because ESG has stolen the spotlight of business practice in so many ways, you almost can’t afford to ignore it anymore. This course is a fantastic primer for getting you on your way to understanding what ESG is and why it’s important for you and your organization,” asserted Greg Cooper, director of executive education at the Gabelli School of Business.

Students who have recently participated in the Boot Camp have confirmed the course content is not only relevant to all that is occurring in the space, but also to what is happening right now in their own work environments.

“As a way to get up to speed on ESG, taking this course was fundamental for me. Professor Hedley inspired me to want to learn more, and I am finding ways to incorporate the concepts into my professional life on a daily basis,” affirmed Aurialis Álvarez, associate, Goldman Sachs, 10,000 Small Businesses Program.
