Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis Announces Final Spring Virtual Financial Issues Forum Lectures Featuring Industry Thought Leaders and Authors

The Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis at Fordham University announced the schedule and content for the final events of its spring lecture series that will present new perspectives on current business industry trends and provide context for emerging financial issues. The virtual discussions, which will be held from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. (EDT) on dates throughout May and June, are free and open to the public, and will feature top industry experts’ knowledge and insights followed by a lively audience Q&A. These events are co-presented by the Museum of American Finance and the CFA Society New York.

What I Learned About Investing from Darwin
Wednesday, May 17, 2023 – 12:00 -1:00 p.m. (EDT)

Pulak Prasad, founder of Nalanda Capital, will discuss his new book, What I Learned About Investing from Darwin, his philosophical perspective on long-term investing based on the principles of evolutionary biology. He reframes good and bad investing decisions by drawing key lessons from core Darwinian concepts and delivering his three mantras of investing: avoid big risks; buy high quality at a fair price; and don’t be lazy—be very lazy. The Price of Time: The Real Story of Interest

Author Edward Chancellor will give an enlightening overview of the original concept and purpose of loans and interest, which began as a practice over five millennia ago. Placing the recent succession of interest rate increases into historical context and discussing the functional role of interest in a capitalist society, he will explore how problematic trends that emerged over the past two decades caused the current crisis, focusing on interest’s essential function in determining how capital is allocated and priced. Problem Solver: Maximizing Your Strengths to Make Better Decisions
Thursday, June 22, 2023 – 12:00-1:00 p.m. (ET)

Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, author, journalist and teacher at Cornell University, founded Decisive, a decision sciences company that trains people and teams in complex problem-solving and decision-making skills using the AREA Method. Through a conversation with Paul Johnson, founding partner of Nicusa Investment Advisors and an adjunct professor at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, she will discuss the research behind her new book, Problem Solver: Maximizing Your Strengths to Make Better Decisions. Einhorn will talk about how understanding the psychology of decision-making helps to identify decision-making strengths and improves awareness of potential blind spots. She will offer guidance about how you can investigate your inner voice and identify cognitive biases, and will share ways to build self-awareness and perspective-taking skills to make better decisions alone and with others.
