Success story: Internship lands Phil Roche ’16 fall consulting gig

0e933afPhilip Roche (GSB ’16) has spent the past three months learning the ropes of online media from industry veterans and a fellow alumnus who recruited Phil for the summer internship at Beanstock Media. Things worked out so well that Phil landed a consulting contract with the firm through year end.

As a business development intern, Phil learned about media analytics, sales techniques, optimizing online campaigns and prospecting new clients. He was one of over 50 candidates considered for three openings in the firm’s Manhattan office.

Phil said that working alongside professionals with 10-15+ years of experience in the online media world—including some at companies like Yahoo! and AOL in the early days of online media —was truly valuable.

“The industry is so expansive,” he said. “There’s been an explosion of technological advances in display advertising in recent years, but almost none of it has been focused on the publishing side.  Beanstock Media’s goal has been to develop tools and services to make publishers more money and provide human value without human overhead.”

John Pedicino (GSB ’12), business development manager at Beanstock for the past year, recruited Phil and was his mentor over the summer. “Phil has grasped challenging concepts and continually offers innovative ways for our team to be more efficient and effective,” John said. “His analytical perspective has aided in growing our business.”

Like Phil, John got a jump start to his career path courtesy of an internship at ABC and through the Fordham network, which led to an offer from Universal McCann in digital analytics. “One thing I believe is invaluable whether you are in media or any other field is the ability to tell stories with numbers,” John explained.

Thanks to the internship experience, Phil has changed his major from marketing to business administration with a concentration in finance and a minor in computer science. “I really see a value in being able to analyze what’s happening on the frontlines in terms of revenue, while also understanding what’s behind that.”
